Tips For Parents of Taekwon-Do Kids

"It's much better to raise strong children than repair broken men."

- William O. Douglas

Do have your child wear his or her uniform to class. This prevents lost or left clothes. It eliminates waiting for the child to change when you're in a hurry.

Don't criticize your child during or immediately after class. Use the PIP (Praise-Improve-Praise) principle and do so at a more appropriate time.

Do try to bring or drop your child off about 5 minutes before class. This optimizes your child's attention span for the class time of 45 minutes.

Don't complain about traffic, your busy schedule or money in front of children; they can begin to feel guilty or selfish.

Do use PIP (Praise-Improve-Praise) to make improvement suggestions to children.

  • Praise: "John, I noticed that your kicks are getting higher."

  • Improve: "At the same time, we want you to learn to pivot the supporting foot when you kick."

  • Praise: "Great, John. I am really excited about how fast and well that you learn."

Don't make your child wrong first to correct an action. Positive reinforcement works just as well as negative reinforcement and the results are better.

Do: Success is consistency. For best results maintain a regular schedule. It teaches your child by example and he learns the importance of regular weekly classes.

Don't miss a class without scheduling a makeup. Anticipate missing classes during vacations and business trips and start your make-ups early.

Do: When you arrive for your class and a class is in progress, kneel, sit or begin stretching quietly in front of the spectator area until the current class ends and yours prepares to start. Use the time before class to visit the toilet and get drinks. Watch to see what you might learn. Visual learning is powerful.

Don't threaten to take away Taekwon-Do when they're misbehaving at home.
